The first France-Canada Carbon Capture and Storage Conference – held in Regina, Saskatchewan on November 16-17, 2009 – brought together researchers, scientists and industry representatives to share the latest developments in CCS in both countries. The two day event – which saw presentations in six different areas including EOR-CO2 storage, deep saline aquifer storage, public policy, regulatory frameworks, technology gaps, and informational presentations from individual companies – was attended by 64 delegates from across North America and France.
Many of the advances being made in various Canadian and French CCS projects were discussed. The Petroleum Technology Research Centre – co-organizers of the event along with the French Embassy in Ottawa – presented its latest findings in the IEA GHG Weyburn-Midale CO2 Monitoring and Storage Project and also introduced participants to its new deep saline formation storage project, Aquistore. Additional information on Saskatchewan projects – including the Boundary Dam and Sask-Montana Project – was provided by the University of Regina and SaskPower. An overview of the approved projects in Alberta was also provided by representatives from Alberta Energy.
French researchers provided details on the Lacq CCS Pilot Project and new research into sequestration of biomass CO2, as well as other presentations such as the value of reservoir monitoring and integrated risk analysis. Overall, delegates were excited by the level of networking and discussions.
A tour of the EnCana Weyburn EOR-CO2 injection facilities was provided to the French delegates on November 18th, and the visitors went on to meetings in Alberta with officials involved in the CCS project there to close out their week in Canada. It is hoped that the fruitful discussions and liaisons developed during the event in Regina will carry over into subsequent years, both through collaboration and a possible second conference in France in 2010 with an expanded focus.
The PTRC, University of Regina and French Embassy would like to thank all participants and corporate sponsors who made the first France-Canada CCS Conference such a success.
